Powder Coating

1. Does it cost more to powder coat than paint?
  • Maybe, maybe not. The Vanilla Gorilla Powder Coating offers a . Compare for yourself.
2 . What is Powder Coating?
  • Powder Coating is a painting process using dry powdered paint that is baked in an oven. The oven curing melts the dry powder into a "gel state" then further curing causes this gel to harden into a very tough coating.
3. Is it Environmentally Friendly?
  • Powder coating is an environmentally friendly process unlike solvent-based wet paint systems. With EPA regulations growing ever stricter, powder coating is fast becoming the technology of choice. Since the powder coating process does not use solvents in any way, VOC emission problems are eliminated.
4. Is Powder Coating Durable?
  • Powder Coatings resist cracking and peeling and are extremely abrasion, corrosion and chemical resistant. The performance characteristics of powder coating match or exceed the characteristics achieved from conventional solvent-based coatings.
5. Why doesn't powder coated parts drip or run in the oven?
  • When powder is in the "gel state" it is very thick like paste and therefore, it doesn't run or drip.
6. What kind of parts can be powder coated?
  • Any metal part can be coated: aluminum, steel, brass, copper, bronze, titanium, . The only questionable metals are magnesium and aluminum castings due to it's chemistry.
7. What Colors Do You Offer?
  • Powder Coatings are available in a large variety of stock colors, metallics, textures and special effects. Custom Powder Coating can assist you in choosing the correct coating and color for your application.
8. What About Holes with Threads & Other Areas That Need To Stay Coating Free?
  • High temperature masking can be applied to special surfaces such as threads or high tolerance areas to keep them from being coated. We also use high temperature silicon plugs for threaded holes or shafts.
9. Is Powder Coating better than liquid paint?
  • Yes, powder coating is thicker 3-4 mils and paint is typically 1-2 mils. The thickness of the powder coating makes powder coating more resistant to scratches and nicks. Powder coating is versatile and can be used on springs without cracking the coating. You can't do that with paint!
10. Can parts be coated with a clear powder coating?
  • Of course, there are several clear powder coatings available from semi gloss to high gloss. The clear powder coating works great on polished parts eliminating the need to keep polishing your parts. And best of all, the clear powder coatings outlast liquid clear coatings.
11. How does the oven temperature affect my metal parts?
  • The oven temperature is low enough to avoid any metal fatigue. We have powder coated automotive leaf and coil springs for hundreds of customers over the last decade without incident.
12. How much does powder coating cost?
  • Powder coating as of lately is usually cheaper but costs about the same as other professionally applied paints or coatings. Some bulk plating processes similar to anodizing may be slightly less expensive. More decorative finishes like chrome plating is substantially more expensive than powder coating.
13. Can I Use Body Filler?
  • The high oven temperature makes the use of plastic and resin body fillers problematic. Often the powder will not bind to a filler's surface causing bubbles in the coating. To be safe, fill any depressions with a torch using brass or welding rod as fill.
14. What is Clear Powder Coating?
  • Clear powder coating serves the same purpose as clear coat wet paint. It protects the underlying finish and adds depth and luster to the surface. Clear powder coat is applied as a second coat and shot while the piece is still hot. Then the piece is returned to the oven for a second curing process. Use clear powder coating on any piece that exposure to elements could cause it to fade or be subject to damage.
15. What's the difference between Powder Coating Inc. and other powder coaters?
  • Vanilla Gorilla Powder Coating has been in the custom powder coating industry for years. We are a "job shop" not a ";production" shop. We provide services that other powder coaters either don't know how to provide or won't. If you have special areas that need to remain free of powder coating, no problem. You want a special transparent or candy color, no problem. You want a custom matched powder, no problem. You only have one part, no problem.
16. How do I get my parts to you?
  • We can pick up and deliver for a charge of $2.50 a mile, includeds loading/unloading. What ever your needs, we can handle them! You can use any Shipping service You like. Please view our    or ReQuest a
